What are Pubic Lice?

Pubic lice, also referred to as crabs, are insects that consume the blood of their human hosts. Anyone who does not act quickly to eliminate an infestation will experience painful itching sensation. Acting quickly is important because some females lay eggs and consume blood every day.

Causes and Symptoms

A pubic lice infestation is usually spread through sexual contact, passing the insects from one body to the next. The most common symptom of a pubic infestation is itching. In some cases, slight skin discolorations occur at the spot of feeding. It is also possible to see eggs and adult lice among hairs.

Treatment and Prevention

There are plenty of methods that can be used to prevent and treat pubic lice. Certain treatments may not work in all situations, so talk with your doctor to find which one will eliminate your infestation.

Most lice are removable with the use of combs, brushes, creams, shampoos, and prescription medications. Some herbs and oils may also remove insects and prevent reappearances. Most product directions require that users leave the treatment on for a while before washing it off. Probably way to eliminate a pubic lice infestation is to shave off the pubic hair. If left untreated, lice can multiple rapidly.

Pubic lice are usually passed through sexual contact. Non-sexual transference occurs when certain items are shared like towels, clothes or mattresses. The best way to avoid getting crabs is to avoid sexual contact with people if you are unsure of their sexual health and whether they may have pubic lice.
